Churches on council leased land have until the 30th of September to pay outstanding debts or risk being evicted from council land, Council has warned.
In a statement Harare Town Clerk Eng. Hosiah Chisango said all church organisations occupying council land for church purposes must clear their outstanding arrears or make a payment plan before the given deadline.
“City of Harare hereby notifies all church organisations currently occupying council land for church purposes to clear their outstanding arrears or visit our offices for a payment plan on or before the 30th of September 2019.
“The church organisations should be in possession of a valid lease agreement and where the lease has expired an application to renew same should be submitted within the same period.”
Eng Chisango said failure to pay or renew their leases council will proceed to terminate the lease agreement and eviction will commence.
“Non-compliance with notice shall be deemed as lack of interest and the City shall proceed to terminate the lease agreement without further notice.
“Eviction from such land will follow thereafter with resultant costs of eviction and recovery of rental arrears being borne by the defaulting tenants,” he said.
Harare City Council is owed in excess of over $920 million by business, churches, Government departments and residents.
