The Town Clerk of the city of Harare Dr. Tendai Mahachi has revealed that the renovations to Harare's ceremonial home of football Rufaro Stadium are nearly complete and that the stadium will be ready by the 9th of March.
Speaking at a site visit to Rufaro Stadium in Mbare to assess the progess of the stadium, Dr. Mahachi indicated that most of the work had been done and only a few areas needed to be covered before Rufaro could be opened to host football matches."Most of the work has been done. The artificial turf has already been laid and we are looking forward to perfecting a few areas to make sure that Rufaro meets international standards", said Dr. Mahachi. He also revealed that the seats have already been numbered according to FIFA dictates."The seats have already been numbered according to FIFA dictates and we are now looking at putting final touches on the players changing rooms, the television room as well as grinding the fence to minimize injuries to players", Dr Mahachi said ,When asked whether the whole exercise of placing the artificial turf to Rufaro stadium was worth it, considering the cash that council could have amassed had it not closed the stadium for renovations, Dr Mahachi pointed out that the whole exercise was worth it considering the fact that Rufaro stadium will soon be hosting international matches thereby generating revenue to the City of Harare.Dr. Mahachi was also asked whether his council was well prepared to maintain the stadium once it was complete and responded saying, "We are very well prepared, in fact we have an employee who is in South Africa to attend a course in the maintenance of the stadium and also have a specialized tractor for the maintenance so what I can say is we are very well prepared". Barring any other technical set back, Dr Mahachi is sure that Rufaro stadium will be ready on the 9th of March for the Premier Soccer League derby featuring champions Dynamos Football Club an city rivals Caps United.
