The City of Harare has advised residents across all wards to stop tampering with prepaid water meters. This follows reports that some residents are removing prepaid meters to avoid purchasing water tokens and accessing water supply directly. In a notice to Ward 10 residents, Councillor Clayd Mashozhera and District Officer Shelta Chikomo warned that such actions are illegal and will attract litigation and prosecution. “Tampering with council water infrastructure is illegal. Offenders will be prosecuted,” the notice read in part. City authorities say the illegal practice not only results in revenue loss for Council but also affects service delivery, as funds from water tokens are used to produce more water and improve water supply. Residents have been encouraged to report suspected cases of meter tampering to their local council offices or nearest police station. Harare residents have been urged to cooperate and ensure that prepaid meters remain intact to guarantee fair and sustainable water distribution.
