Harare Backs High-Density Housing to Tackle Demand- Harare Mayoro Tackle Demand
The City of Harare has called for more private sector and diaspora investment in well-planned high-density housing to meet growing demand in the capital.

The City of Harare has called for more private sector and diaspora investment in well-planned high-density housing to meet growing demand in the capital. In a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Mayor Cllr Rosemary Muronda, at the official opening of Homelink Heights in Crowborough, Harare yesterday, His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Jacob Mafume said housing remains fundamental to human dignity and national development. Mayor Mafume said as Harare continues to grow, the City must embrace innovative financing and institutional partnerships to promote inclusive urban development. "This development demonstrates how responsible investment and institutional partnerships can contribute to housing delivery, economic growth and improved living standards," said Mayor Mafume. He said projects such as Homelink Heights complement the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 (2026-2030) and Sustainable Development Goal 11 on inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities. The Mayor said Council supports high-density developments that optimise land use, provided they are backed by adequate infrastructure, reliable services and compliance with municipal planning and environmental standards. "We commend Homelink for its investment and encourage continued collaboration with the City to ensure sustainable development and responsible property management," he said. Mayor Mafume congratulated the Homelink Board, management and contractors for the project and urged more institutions to provide investment opportunities that inspire confidence among Zimbabweans at home and abroad. The housing project was officially opened by Mutapa Investment Fund Chief Executive Officer Dr John P. Mangudya. Housing Committee Chairperson Cllr Blessing Muroyiwa, Cllr Adonia Shoko, and Director Housing and Community Services, Dr Addmore Nhekairo also graced the occasion.
