City of Harare has introduced community based refuse collection as a way of improving waste management.

City of Harare has introduced community based refuse collection as a way of improving waste management. The implementation comes as way to deal with illegal dumpsites and improve refuse collection in the city. Speaking during the End of The First Quarter Presentation, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the city is also constructing a waste transfer station at Kelvin depot and in Glen Norah which are to be completed before the end of year. "The problem of waste is perennial but in all these circumstances we choose hope and we have a firm belief in the fact that these challenges can be solved," said Mayor Mafume. Mayor Mafume encouraged residents to stop the inherent habit of throwing litter at undesignated points so as to keep the city clean. Mayor Mafume added that the city has also a plan of buying 15 refuse compactors in order to improve door to door refuse collection in the communities.
