Harare City Council has started the rehabilitation of sewage pipes in Mbare as it moves to address some of the causes of the Cholera pandemic. Council has laid out plans to upgrade the existing communal toilet and bathroom facilities and install septic tanks to enable connections to individual toilets. Town clerk, Eng Hosiah Chisango, said while Council has sourced funding from other projects it is seeking additional assistance from Government. "Government declared a state of emergency in Mbare because of the cholera outbreak so the City has moved in to commence the works we need to do in terms of waste water management.” "We are upgrading sewers and also putting in new sewers and also putting new sewers where there was no sewer reticulation for the people," he said. Eng Chisango said residents were sharing communal facilities which might have been the cause of cholera. "The communal toilets that they were using will be upgraded to make them pay toilets for people using the market. "Work has commenced and we are looking to complete the project at the end of June."
